In November 2015, McKinney Public Library Systems began offering video-based software training at no charge to library cardholders. Provided by Atomic Training, the video systems allow patrons of the library to learn new skills in the area of technology.
Improved Job Skills
Through Atomic Training, library cardholders are able to access thousands of short videos that provide training on how to use many different types of technology that is prevalent today. The library hopes that the free software will allow patrons to improve job skills, allowing those who complete the program to add more skills to their resume which may increase employment opportunities. Representatives of the library system say that they hope the system will eliminate technology barriers that often reduce the chances of gainful employment. Because the system is delivered in an online format, there is more flexibility for those who may have work, family or social obligations that prevent them from attending traditional classes on the subjects.
The videos available for free through the library system include topics such as Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. There are also videos available that provide training in Photoshop, a popular photo editing program. Library cardholders can also develop social media techniques through tutorials on Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets. Information is also provided on blogging and podcasts to further expand knowledge of social media. There are even tutorials on using mobile products, including iPhones and IPads, as well as Kindles and Nooks. These videos may be very beneficial after the holidays when new mobile devices are received as gifts. All videos are closed captioned for those with disabilities as well.
Atomic Learning is one of education’s most trusted training solutions providers. Because they were founded by educators, they understand the challenges many people face in understanding today’s technology. The company provides videos to educational institutions and libraries throughout the globe in an effort to bring technology training to the average person. Almost every type of technology is available through their extensive video library so users are likely to find the training video that meets their needs.
